Young Gamechangers program will set recommendations for Augusta leaders

Thursday Aug. 11, 2016
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — 50 of the states’s young gamechangers will be working for the next five months to make Augusta a world class city. Thursday the mayor and young leaders from across the state kicked off their challenge.

Ian Bridgeforth runs Georgia Shift, a non-profit that engages young people in politics, it’s right here in Augusta. He’s also a young gamechanger.

“I felt that it was an opportunity to really reinvest in Augusta and invest in somewhere that I live, work, and play every day,” Bridgeforth said.

Ian and 49 other young professionals will be creating recommendations to present to city leaders. They will be looking into how to revive the riverfront area, how to retain and attract young people like themselves, the best way downtown and Augusta University can connect, and how to deal with housing needs as the cyber industry and Fort Gordon grow.

“‘Looking at it from a new perspective, looking at it from the perspective of people not just in Augusta, but have not been in Augusta blending those ideas and those concepts to be able to grow Augusta,” Bridgeforth said.

Kris Vaughn, Executive Director of Georgia Forward says she knows this is not just an idea sharing program. She was part of the first Young Gamechangers program that recommended changes in Americus, Georgia.

“When you put this mix of people together and you give them a problem to solve, the more diverse the group and the more experiences they bring to the table, really the better the recommendations are,” Vaughn said.

In Americus, they took gamechangers recommendations for the foundation of their downtown master plan. In Dublin, they are using recommendations as a checklist and have already funded and completed a riverwalk master plan. In Douglasville, the Young Gamechangers are implementing their own recommendations and starting their own non-profit.

“People say the grass is greener on the other side, but I think if we water our own grass that it will be just as green,” Bridgeforth said.

One third of the young leaders are from Augusta, one third are from the Atlanta area, and another third are from other parts of Georgia. They will present their action plans with funding sources and timelines in December.
