USC Aiken pedestrian bridge coming together

Friday, July 22, 2016 News 12 NBC 26 at 6 O’Clock

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — A campus connection years in the making

“This is a project that’s been a long time coming,” Senior University Facilities Executive at USC Aiken Brian Enter said.

Brian Enter is helping make the pedestrian bridge a reality tomorrow night, 9 years after the Convocation Center opened.
It’s not just connecting two sides of campus though.

“Currently we use a crosswalk,” Enter said, “This highway is designated as a major highway from the SCDOT. It’s 55 miles per hour and it can be quite risky.”

A crosswalk many faculty and students say they are not even sure drivers know is there.

“Especially trying to get across with all the cars during rush hour, you have to be really careful, typically involves running out to the middle and stopping and then running the rest of the way over,” Angel Miano said, who is the Associate Director of Student Life.

Making the walk safer was needed with big events like Presidential hopefuls to every day university events.

“Pep rallies to the actual games and we also host events like dance marathon over there sometimes, so we use it a lot,” USCA Senior Monica Martin said.

The bridge comes as SCDOT is looking to widen the road, the bridge will get pedestrians off the road and solve an age old college problem.

“What this bridge will also provide is additional parking for our students,” Enter said, “Right now parking is always a premium at any higher education institution.”

There a couple more steps after the bridge is put into place such as stairs and ramps, lights and pathways to tie it into a $1.8 million bow by late fall.

“A safer way to get across the street as well as I think it’s going to look nice on our campus,” Martin said.

The traffic delay caused by putting the bridge in will last from Saturday at 6 PM till some time on Sunday.

AIKEN S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — The University of South Carolina Aiken pedestrian bridge will block off traffic July 23.

Construction crews will install the two main elements of the USC Aiken pedestrian bridge, which will connect the main campus to the convocation center. This will allow safe passage for students, faculty, staff and community visitors crossing Robert M. Bell Parkway, according to the school’s director.

Construction will start at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. State troopers will divert Robert M. Bell Parkway traffic around the USC Aiken Convocation Center, via Champion Way and Proud Pacer Road.
Crews expect regular traffic pattern to return Sunday.

The USC Aiken director said workers are expected to assemble the crane to move the new bridge into place between 6 and 8 p.m. Around 9 p.m., the crane will put the two pieces of the bridge together to form one, long piece. That piece will swoop over the roadway around 10 p.m., connecting the campus and the Convocation Center.

The bridge is expected to be completed by late fall.
