UPDATE| 400 gallon diesel spill causes headaches along Mike Padgett

Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016 News 12 First at Five

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — It was just another day at the restaurant for Chris Kuneman.

“I was in my office, I heard a loud boom boom,” Kuneman said.

It was two semi trucks crashing into each other this morning, no injuries, but a big headache.

“Just thankful that nobody was seemingly hurt bad it was just a lot of damage, a lot of inconvenience, but other than that fortunate nobody got hurt bad,” Kuneman said.

The crash spilled 400 gallons of diesel fuel and took a large crew to clean it all up. Kuneman sees this road everyday outside of Rack and Grill II, he says crashes like this used to be really common.

“It hadn’t been so much during construction because it slowed everybody down, but used to be quite common,” he said.

Even since construction started on Mike Padgett there have been several accidents and even spills like today. Kuneman says the new construction should help though.

“I hope so,” Kuneman said, “I know it won’t hurt, they shouldn’t be coming over the opposing lanes.”

But days like today slowed down construction crews. They were waiving traffic instead of doing road work.

Even after construction, Kuneman says there are still lots of trucks and other traffic on this busy industrial road.

“Plenty of trucks, what worries me mostly is I’m hoping that eventually they’ll put a stoplight here because we have school buses from Cross Creek entering and exiting Mike Padgett,” he said.

It is still being determined what actually caused the crash.

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Crews have said it could be mid to late afternoon before a diesel spill could be cleaned up on Mike Padgett Highway.

Around 10 a.m. Wednesday, Augusta-Richmond County EMA responded to a crash involving two tractor-trailers and closed down Mike Padgett Highway southbound at 4 H Club Road. The road has remained closed since the crash and crews have flagged traffic around it.

According to the Augusta Fire Department, about 400 gallons of diesel fuel spilled on the roadway near a construction area. Reeves Construction has stopped any major construction activities to focus on flagging traffic and keeping the area clear for responders and to allow clean-up crews to do their work. They were working off the roadway in another area installing pipe when the incident happened, according to Kyle Collins with Georgia DOT.
