Truck Stop the first stop for downtown development

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — New food and a new look in downtown North Augusta, thanks to David Brannon.

“It’s not until they meet me in person they go wow you’re 17 and I say yeah I am,” Brannon said, “That’s when I always get the questions about senior project and how I got the idea to do this.”

Brannon says he saw the opportunity next to Jackson Square for the Truck Stop in a downtown lacking options.

“Doesn’t take much experience to take action, it just takes someone willing to take that action,” he said.

This spring city leaders looked at downtown code and decided it was holding back new businesses, but changes to food truck rules now open up opportunity for people like Brannon to step in.

“I just want to see some new, young businesses thrive here, that can attract young people from downtown, can attract young people from Columbia County, I think the downtown Greeneway Connector will play a big role in that,” Brannon said.

The Truck Stop is just a start for a new downtown mixing the old with new, but the city is still hesitant on the Greeneway connector until they see businesses.
“If we create some things people will come and I think the idea of extending the Greeneway up further through downtown is an excellent idea,” Riverside Smoke BBQ Owner Scott Gibbs said.

And with a new work force popping up downtown more food options are a plus

“We don’t always want to order in and everything, so it’s nice to be able to walk,” Jennifer Baker said, who works at MEDAC.

A new University Health Care building is just about ready to open too…and with a new pizza place just down the road, Brannon hopes this isn’t the last stop for growth.

“This is something that doesn’t die with me, I want it to be something that can live on with the rest of the development that’s going to happen in North Augusta,” Brannon said.
