Tiny houses with big decisions on the way

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT)– It’s not your typical house tour.

“So it’s easy pulls out, the pillows go in, everything comes back out, we make the bed and it’s a full size bed,” Kimberly Campolattaro said.

Kimberly and Timothy Campolattaro live in a tiny house in Aiken County. While the trend is just taking off they’ve been thinking of this for 15 years.

“We wanted to design our own home and really down size and just have a simpler life without all the stuff,” she said.

“A lot of storage space as you can see and I actually need a stool to get to the top,” Kimberly said.

The cramped lifestyle isn’t for everyone especially with no TV, but it’s exactly what they needed in life.

“So we’ve taken up arts and activities and I play a flute now, we paint, we read, we walk on our property, we get outside and hike,” she said.

While it’s their choice to live tiny, it’s not as easy as setting up a house.

“It wasn’t until we bought the house here and tried to hook up the electricity that we found out differently,” Kimberly said.

Tiny homes are considered RVs by the state, which means the property the Campolattaro’s are on is the wrong zoning. But while county council is trying to accommodate the more than a dozen tiny home requests in the past year, it’s really the state that will make the final decision.

“The ordinance that they wrote is really the best they can do right now for everyone involved until the state moves forward, so we won’t have to take too many steps backward in the future,” she said.

For now they are on a one year temporary permit till February with hopes of staying for the long haul with their whole lives in Aiken.

“I think the state has to look at accommodating or they will lose a lot of revenue from tiny house people,” she said.

If nothing is solved by February then they could be forced to move out of Aiken County, but they are confident in the county. This is an issue the state will be taking an interest in over the next month with two meetings scheduled. Aiken County Council will have their next vote on the temporary ordinance in their August meeting.
