Parents raise concerns over transportation in Aiken County

Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2016 News 12 NBC 26

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — Getting the kids on the bus, something a little more difficult for Mary Burgess.

“I get up at 4 O’clock in the morning, I try to make it to the bus stop at least by 6:30 now, used to be 6:45, it’s called being a parent,” Burgess said, whose kids go to Jefferson Elementary.

Burgess’ kids have gone to Jefferson Elementary for 18 years, out of their zone, which means driving to a sitters house every morning to make sure they get to school.

“And I’ve done this for 18 years at the same school, same bus driver, same babysitter and we’ve never had a problem,” Burgess said.

Aiken County School District policy says if kids are going to a school outside their zone “transportation will be furnished by the parent or legal guardian.” Meaning, if your kid is out of the school zone, they aren’t getting on a bus. No matter what.

“You have somebody that is inside the school zone along a designated route that a bus currently travels, why can’t kids be dropped off somewhere where they’re going to be safe,” Ed Hatcher said.

Hatcher is trying to help Burgess and other parents dealing with the same issue.
The district told him the policy is not new but it is being enforced.

“These buses that have empty seats and in their instance, they’re not taking up space that is needed,” Hatcher said.

The transportation office says the buses are not full, but for Burgess and other single parents facing the same issues, they feel the district is putting their kids in danger.

“I don’t care what child is sitting out there waiting to be taken, take them, they should be on that bus,” Burgess.

The school district did not want to comment before the meeting so they could hear the concerns first hand. Hatcher will speak in front of the Board of Education tonight at 7:00 PM.

In the school’s policy it says there are financial and health exceptions to the rules.
