Mayor holds fishing rodeo to get kids involved in the community and outdoors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) –More than 150 kids and teens cast their lines into the Mayor’s Fishing Hole. It’s an event Mayor Hardie Davis hopes will create a positive ripple effect through these young lives.

“It’s been a wonderful way for us to bridge the gap with young people in our community, who would otherwise never get exposed to fishing and in some cases probably never even exposed to out here being at the pond,” Mayor Davis said.

Davis has a young son, Benjamin, whose been fishing since he was two. The mayor says it’s things as simple as today’s event that brings leaders closer to the community.

“It changes the trajectory of their life. We’ve got 150 kids who are out here today and it’s a positive message, a positive message of the good things going on,” Davis said.

For the mayor, this emphasizes just how strong Augusta can be.

“We’ve got all of the stuff that has gone on in Dallas, that’s happened in Baton Rouge, that has happened in Minnesota, and this is a way for us to come together,” Davis said.

The mayor says in the past year his office has been able to reach kids through the “My Brother’s Keeper Initiative.” President Obama challenged cities to be a part of it. Now, Mayor Davis wants more volunteers and partners to keep expanding.

“All of us have to be hands on and engage in the lives of children all across our community,” Davis said.

“The things that we launched last year that we are continuing to do, I think the success of anything is being able to build capacity and so we are committed to these things,” Davis said.

So whether they are learning to bait the hook, or cast, Mayor Davis thinks it’s a few hours at the fishing hole that can change a child’s life.

“We are here to help, we are here to support, and we are going to make Augusta better, and we are going to be stronger together,” Davis said.
