Interest in tiny homes growing in Aiken County

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — A new craze could be one of Aiken’s tiniest problems.

“At the meeting we had several folks that are living in tiny homes now that came to the meeting that were interested in where we were going to go with it,” Aiken County Councilman Andrew Siders.

Aiken County Council passed the first reading of rules allowing re-zoning for tiny homes around the county. Councilman Siders says the issue comes from the state level.

“The problem is these are classified in South Carolina as RVs and you can’t have permanent utilities connected to an RV,” Siders said.

But now others have their interests peaked like Jim Rhodes and Aiken Equine Rescue.

“I didn’t actually realize that there was an issue or a problem until we gained two good neighbors across the street a husband and wife team that had put a tiny house in on 9 acres of land and they couldn’t get permanent power hooked up,” Jim Rhodes said, with Aiken Equine Rescue.

He can envision a couple tiny homes at the rescue.

“But I would like maybe 2 to 3 tiny homes coming down that would have a common area in between,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes says these tiny houses would go a long way with the veterans they help out.

“We have a lot veterans that are coming out that need temporary housing, we have a lot of veterans that are coming out that just need some reassurance,” Rhodes said.

While Rhodes wants more of these homes now, he says this is a start.

“I do think it’s going to be a good craze in the future, good things are going to come from this,” Rhodes said.

The new zoning for tiny homes could be changed again as the state is looking into their own regulations

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — Some tiny houses could pop up in the future of Aiken County.

The county administrator said someone came to council with a proposal to change the zoning for tiny houses a couple weeks ago. Council tabled the vote in favor of making the regulations at large for the county.

Leaders are set to focus on the property zoning for the whole county on this issue not just the one property owner who proposed the change. County administrator Clay Killian said people in the community were concerned about the size of the property being zoned and have only had one request for a tiny home.
