AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — Flooding in Louisiana has resulted in homes being lost and property damaged, in Aiken County the same risk is there.
“I hear the story, I haven’t flooded in 30 years, we hear that every time when people are leaving their house,” Rick Hallman said.
Hallman is the Flood Plain Manager in Aiken County where there are more than 46 thousand properties in a flood zone and many unaware and without flood insurance.
“That’s just saying there is a higher risk of flooding, but every parcel in Aiken County is subject to some types of issues or problems,”Hallman said.
One of those properties is just down from Sudlow Lake…Jerry McGee lives on some low-lying property…with water just a couple yards from the house.
“We’ve had some pretty bad rains and some pretty bad washes, but other than that it runs off good and we’ve been safe so far,” he said.
But after flooding in Louisiana and even closer to home in Columbia, McGee decided insurance might be the right call.
“We said well we need to look into this because we live in a low-lying area, we live on a pond and the creeks rise,” McGee said.
FEMA updates the flood maps and just suggested new changes to 1,100 properties mostly around the Savannah River. But to check your property it’s as simple as going to the FEMA flood maps selecting your area and typing in an address.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Devastating floods ravaging through southern Louisiana has many people across the country concerned about flooding, particularly close to home.
Last October, much of the state of South Carolina was submerged in flood water, with many calling it the most devastating flood the state has ever seen.
Many people don’t suspect a flood could happen to them, and by then, its too late. Home insurance companies won’t cover floods. Homeowners need to know the risk of flooding for their home and get flood insurance.

FEMA has a free one-step flood risk profile where you can check your flood risk status for your home or business. They also have facts about floods and tools to help you find a flood insurance agent.

EMA will also host an open house, where they will provide residents of Edgefield county and its municipalities the opportunity to see the preliminary flood maps, learn about their risk of flooding, and ask questions about what the new maps will mean for their property, according to a news release.
Residents can meet one-on-one with a variety of specialists who will be available to talk about flood insurance, engineering, building permits and more.
The event is scheduled for Sept. 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the EMA office located on 304 Gray Street.
