Former Augusta mayor and Unisys start annual trolley tech tour

Tuesday, July 2, 2016
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) –It’s the first “Tech Trolley Tour” showcasing Broad Street in downtown Augusta, and city leaders hope it’s not the last. Former Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver and Unisys Chief Trust Officer Tom Patterson wanted to show people what they don’t see when they walk downtown.

“Show off to the other attendees at this great TechNet conference just give them another slice of what’s going on here in Augusta,” Patterson said.

So far, Unisys has brought in almost 300 new jobs, giving new life to the old Fort Discovery Building. They expect to double the number of jobs in the next couple years, but it’s these smaller cyber businesses Patterson wants companies in town for Technet to see.

“Everyone’s heard of the cyber revolution, all the cyber work that is coming to Fort Gordon,” Patterson said.

Behind the windows and hiding behind building wall is what Georgia Congressman Rick Allen says is the future of Augusta.

“You can’t duplicate this and we’ve got a great inventory and it’s really neat to see it happen,” Allen said.

MealViewer, which creates digital signs says it’s tripled business every year for the last three years.

“This is really the beginning and I think we’ve got the next three years of hyper growth around cyber,” Patterson said.

“Cyber and the cyber industry is the greatest economic development opportunity probably in the history of this district,” Allen said.
