Broad Street in downtown Augusta is filling up with businesses

Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Open only for a month, owner Emily Dortch of the Broad Street Barkery is glad to be a part of the transition she thinks downtown is seeing.

“We noticed that there was nothing for pets down here,” Dortch said.

Pets like Gracie, who is a rescue looking for her forever home, can get a full service grooming, and you can even buy locally made treats and more. Business is taking off.

“The first week was practically nothing, the second week we were increasing by 100 percent, and the next week was like 200 percent,” Dortch said.

From July 1st till now the Barkery says it’s seen 3,000% growth in business. Augusta’s Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Margaret Woodard says it’s places like the Barkery that show other businesses that downtown is the place to be.

“The businesses here are successful shows that people are moving here because businesses tend to open when you have a vibrant living population,” Woodard said.

Woodard says she just had a client looking for a 5,000 square foot space and they only had one building available to show. That property already had two people interested in it ahead of them. Now, the DDA is looking to get creative to find more spaces as Broad Street fills up.

“Just because it doesn’t have a for sale sign on it we contact property owners and let them know that there is an interest and then they may think this may be a good time to sell,” Woodard said.

They could also ask property owners if they are interested in leasing, but sooner or later the DDA says development will head down Broad Street toward Gordon Highway and onto Greene Street, then on toward Reynolds.

“Downtown has a tight community that wants to support other businesses downtown and that has been a huge thing for us,” Dortch said.

Woodard says some buildings still are sitting empty because of absentee and out of town landlords or because the properties are in family trusts.
