Bowling alley refuses to strike deal to fix road

Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 News NBC 26 at 6 O’Clock

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — More than 30 thousand cars pass this bowling alley every year, but inside, owner Maryanne Budnichuck is trying to avoid striking out on losing her property.

“Two years into the process when we were really hitting our stride, we get hit with we’re taking your parking away,” Budnichuck said.

The city needs part of her Strikehouse Bowl property. A traffic study of Dougherty Road in 2014 shows the need to expand with 142 accidents just in the past 4 years, according Aiken Public Safety.

“This intersection is one of the worst five intersections for accidents in the city and I believe in the county,” Mayor Rick Osbon said.

But the city and Budnichuck have failed to come to an agreement. In a letter sent to the city attorney, Budnichuck’s lawyer outlined several concerns including the impact on her business.

“We never got a response,” she said.

Her fear is losing parking spots and maybe being forced to renovate the entrance to the building.

“A bowling alley of even this small size is required to have 70 parking spaces, I have 35, I’m going to go down to 28 if they take mine,” Budnichuck said.

The city enlisted SCDOT to help in negotiations, but Budnichuck says it’s a strike against small businesses.

“I would hope that no one felt that the city was against small business because most of job creation actually occurs through small businesses,” Osbon said.

The city sees fixing this intersection as the key to traffic and safety issues on Whiskey Road, but she sees it as a drain on her business.

“All we ask is that they pay what it’s worth, I mean if it has to be done then we just expect to come to a amicable resolution where everybody can be satisfied,” Budnichuck said.

Budnichuck and her lawyer will meet with SCDOT and city officials Tuesday to try to come to an agreement. There have also been questions about taking some of the Walgreens property next door, but the city says it would not work because the turn would be unsafe.
