AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Cyber security is a huge issue across the country, especially in our area with Cyber Command at Fort Gordon. Events like TechNet have begun to encourage outside businesses to come in and transitioning military personnel from Fort Gordon to stay in Augusta.

The world of cyber security in Augusta is just beginning, but in a short time, it will become the new reality.

“In about three years, we probably expect the headquarters of Army Cyber it come here,” said Bob Wood, the Executive Vice President of AFCEA International

It’s day one of Technet, a technology trade show that brings in vendors from across the county. Companies like Fortinent came in from California.

“Augusta produces a massive crop of cyber security specialists,” said Stephan Tellent, Senior Director Manager of Security Service Providers.

Since the event started coming to Augusta four years ago, the number of particpants is increasing ranking in at nearly 3,000 registrants on day one.

“We already have the Center of Excellence and the Installation Command,” said Wood, “But bringing the tactical level command here will be incredibly important to add momentum to what’s already started.”

As Augusta continues to become a cyber hub, many military personnel want to stay. Michael Kirk is one of several military personnel at Fort Gordon slowly making the transition out

“I’m looking at retiring, yes,” said Kirk.

He and his family plan to stay in Augusta.

“I want to stay doing cyber,” explained Kirk, “You’ve got a lot of opportunities with it here. You’ve got all the growth on Fort Gordon. You’ve got the Savannah River.”

As Fort Gordon grows the new Cyber Command Center, Augusta’s local economy is becoming more attractive.

The Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau said this event brings in more than 1 million dollars to the local economy. TechNet is in Augusta until Thurs.
