Augusta stop the violence activist stops her mission to collect guns

Monday, Aug. 1, 2016
RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) — Just over two months ago Lala Alston who was tired of hearing about shootings in Augusta started a project to bring people in her store to hand over guns, for cash. Now, that’s over and the guns are going to the sheriff’s office.

“I didn’t think about how dangerous it could be or potentially get,” Alston said.

A sergeant with the scrap metal and motor vehicle theft unit with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office noticed Lala’s efforts and told her it could be problematic.

“A couple people kept coming in the store saying if you’re collecting guns you know that could get dangerous, somebody may even want to steal guns because you’re going to pay them for them,” Alston said.

Lala said she didn’t realize that could all happen at the time, but says that conversation opened her eyes.

“We wanted to help so bad, you didn’t think about the risks because all you wanted to do was make a change and sometimes when you want to make a change so bad you don’t counter up the costs,” Alston said.

During her efforts Lala collected 13 guns. She says she knows at least three young men that she got through to. Now, she’s mentoring one.

“It breaks my heart because whenever you try to do something good or when you do something good, everybody forgets that you did something good and any little bad thing that happened everybody remembers that,” Alston said.

Even though Lala won’t be collecting guns anymore, she is still focused on stopping the violence.

“It’s not the fact that your killing the person you’re targeting, bullets aint got no names on it,” Alston said.
