Augusta leaders tour South Augusta to see potential development opportunities

News 12 NBC 26 / Thursday, July 21, 2016

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) –City leaders and developers all filled an Augusta bus Thursday to make sure they know all of the development opportunities when they need to make decisions downtown. The focus is on South Augusta.

“We’re trying to bring some life in some areas that haven’t had life in many years,” Augusta Commissioner Mary Davis said.

“I’m glad we are bringing more attention back to South Augusta,” Mary Davis said.

From Tobacco Road, to Windsor Spring, and up and down Gordon Highway, Mayor Davis says the opportunities are in South Augusta.

“We have the land that’s available, we have plans that have been done over the last 15 to 20 years so now lets take them and run with those things,” Mayor Hardie Davis said.

The mayor is focusing on a plan put together in 2010 that outlined areas all across South Augusta that could still be used today.

“There are people that are very interested in the economic growth and development in this region, in this corridor,” Mayor Davis said.

Now, the interest is increasing. The Mayor says cyber companies are coming in. Developer Dennis Trotter said residential developers are becoming more and more interested in leaving Columbia County and doing work in south Richmond County.

“With cyber command especially and with some growth that we have going on downtown I think this could all be an area that also benefits from that growth,” Mary Davis said.

The tour highlighted success the city is already seeing such as on the even busier Tobacco and Deans Bridge Roads.

“When people come to south Augusta, whether it’s a restaurant, whether it’s a new grocer those investments are long term and they get their return on investment,” Mayor Davis said.

The mayor says he plans to sit down with a small group of commissioners to see what policies can be put in place to incentivize developers to come into south Augusta.
