Administrator and Augusta Parks Director want to move parks department into 21st Century

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) –Both the city administrator and the parks director are fairly new to Augusta’s government and they have big ideas to move Augusta into the 21st Century.

“We’re going to have to refocus ourselves to modern times,” Augusta City Administrator Janice Allen Jackson said.

“Lets make some impact and really change the look and the feel and the programming of a lot of our parks going forward,” Augusta Parks Director Glenn Parker said.

Consultants hired to do a master plan for parks recommend Augusta become more user friendly, suggesting the parks department have it’s own app and website so people can book facilities and see programs. Right now you have to come into the parks office to fill out paperwork.

“We’d love to get to the point just like booking a hotel, you can book everything online,” Parker said.

“Eventually we would like to have Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat and all the mediums that are out there now to get the word out,” Parker said.

It’s all part of a plan to brand Augusta’s parks so you know what the city has to offer.

“People may know about what’s in their immediate area, but not have any idea of what’s happening in other sections of the community,” Jackson said.

“We really need some direction for our park system,” Jackson said.

Jackson wants to create a friends of the parks group so private investment goes into these areas, not just money straight out of your tax dollars.

“Many libraries and park systems across the country have friends of sorts of groups,” Jackson said.

The Augusta Commission could vote on the master plan on Augusta 30th.
