AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) — Teachers are ready to get the new school year underway as books pile up for some Aiken County students getting ready for a new level of classes.

“Over the summer we’ve had who have attended professional development throughout the United States in preparation for AP Academy here at South Aiken,” Martha Messick said, an assistant principal at South Aiken High School.

Last spring the school system decided to focus on STEM related courses

“The job market dictates that, we need thinkers, we need individuals who can help push forward technology, engineering, the sciences,” Aiken County Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford said.

South Aiken along with North Augusta High will lead the STEM charge this fall. Already South Aiken has seen enrollment for AP exams go from 474 to more than 900. These courses are not just helping kids prepare for college though.

“The further exposed students to high level thinking, problem solving, things that they’re going to need to be successful whether they go straight into a career or they go into college,” Messick said.

The community hopes to keep students in the area and with more jobs popping up it falls on the schools to prepare them.

“We’ve got the site, we’ve got Bridgestone, we’ve got Starbucks that’s opening up and so there’s a need,” Messick said,”And as a school we should be ensuring that we’re meeting the needs of our community with the courses that we’re offering.”

Also this fall Aiken High School will look at the IB program and bring it in next school year. The school district also hopes to start other themes at schools around the county like a center for the arts and one focusing more on technology.
